In the beginning of the age of photography, the pioneers used cameras witch demanded motives to freeze for several minutes. Today we use cameras and lenses that have the possibility to expose a motive in 1/8000 sec. or less time. The motive doesn’t have to stay still anymore.

In this series I have used long exposure time in study of the body. The body in motion makes beautiful patterns, witch are hidden in the recording, but reveals itself when I develop the films.

How to show mortality trough photo manipulation?
This was the quest I tried to answer in my bachelor project last spring. It was my final project in becoming a teacher in art, crafts and design. Together with trying to answer this quest, it was important for me to communicate the importance of having good photographic material to work with.

Too many use photography as a base for their art, without photographic knowledge. They paint pictures of humans based on photos they have shot without thoughts of all the changes that can happen with a photo if they have no control with the photographic process. The results often become paintings witch suppose to show human reality, but have wrong colours and tones because of the lack of control during the photographic recordings. Instead of showing humans as they look in real, they show humans as they are interpreted by their cameras without their knowledge.

My project had two components. The first was to use good photographic material. I use the zone-system when recording photos, and I mostly use traditional film. The reason for using traditional film is that I get the possibility to work with bigger pictures and can blow up small selections without significant lack of quality. I also get visual grain instead of visual pixels. (I love grain). When I have developed the films, I scan the negatives in high resolution.

The second part of the project was to manipulate the photos digitally to show mortality. I was not interested in filling the pictures with effects for the sake of effects only, but use effects carefully and in according to my goal. I have seen too many manipulated photos where the designer has got lost in his or hers effect-making. When using too much, the message drowns. The best results become when the viewer ask if it is a manipulation or not.

The project was my first in serious manipulation, and I’m sure I could have done it better with more practice and knowledge. I let it be up to the viewers out there to decide if the theme mortality is shown by the pictures.

I have never been here before. It was my first, and probably my only visit. There are many places like this, abondoned islands in the norths, ruins of farms in the east, empty buildings in the south.

I sat down in a chair. Felt like home.

Thoughts about time

Time passes, sometimes slowly. Sometimes fast. Sometimes we wish to hold it still. Stretch a moment so long in time that we can fit our whole life into it.

Sometimes we search for moments that have past. Looking back, only to find that those moments is unreachable. They have gone into the shadows of memories, where time does not longer exist.

We cannot reach back in time. Neither can we reach the future. Where the past has memories free of time, the future has wishes time yet hasn’t reached. And in between memories and wishes, is our time.

Who are you?

I know people who say they are teachers, doctors, students, policemen or unemployed. I’m not sure exactly what I am, but I collect impressions and share some of them trough photos.

I’m attending a master study in special needs education, with a major in social and behaviour disorders. What interests me the most are the quite, invisible children who seldom get attention from their teachers. Some of these children have major psychological problems which stays unsolved if nobody sees them.

I have realized that in hard times I search for mirrors instead of windows. Mirrors which tells me everything is ok, instead of windows which let me see the sun.
